How exactly
does it work...

...with the 100 km/h speed limit?

(for Germany only)

The speed limit for vehicles with trailers in Germany is 80 km/h on the Autobahn and speedways. But there are exceptions for some vehicles with trailers, which are allowed to drive up to 100 km/h (§ 18(5) Nr.1 StVO).

In order to achieve this the trailers must have certain technical characteristics. Basically all our 3DOG camping trailers fulfill these requirements so they receive a corresponding entry in the papers when they are registered and receive the 100 km/h sticker with seal. However the driver is now responsible that his combination of vehicles conforms to the following conditions:

  • Trailers without brakes or trailers with brakes but without hydraulic shock absorbers: permitted weight of the trailer* no more than 0.3 x empty weight of the towing vehicle*
  • Caravan with brakes and hydraulic shock absorbers: permitted weight of the trailer * no more than 0.8 x empty weight of the towing vehicle*
  • Other trailers (e.g. 3DOG camping) with brakes and hydraulic shock absorbers: permitted weight of the trailer* no more than 1.1 x empty weight of the towing vehicle*

In addition:

  • The towing vehicle must be fitted with ABS
  • permitted weight of the trailer* = no more than permitted weight of the towing vehicle*,
  • permitted weight of the trailer* = no more than permitted trailer load of the towing vehicle*,
  • tyres on the trailer no more than 6 years old.

But what about trailers by 3DOG camping?

The version without brakes can be towed at 100 km/h if the towing vehicle has ABS and an empty weight of 2,500 kg. Also the loaded trailer must not weigh more than stated in the registration document in field O.2.

Trailers with brakes with a permitted total weight of 1,000 kg can be towed at 100 km/h if the towing vehicle has an empty weight of 910 kg and the loaded trailer does not weigh more than stated in the registration document in field O.1

* Die Massenangaben können dem Fahrzeugschein entnommen werden:
Leermasse > Feld G,   zulässige Masse > Feld F.1
zulässige Anhängelast gebremst > Feld O.1
zulässige Anhängelast ungebremst > Feld O.2

… with the new driving licence?

(for Germany only)

On the older grey and pink driving licences the following groups of vehicles were Class 3. Anyone can tow a trailer who holds this licence. Since 1999 a separate licence of Class BE may be required to drive with a trailer under certain conditions.

Symbol Führerschein Klasse B

Car with a permitted total weight of 3,500 kg with trailer up to 750 kg. Or with trailer over 750 kg if the permitted total weight of the trailer, the empty weight of the towing vehicle and the permitted total weight of the load does not exceed 3,500 kg.

Symbol Führerschein Klasse BE

For a combination of towing vehicle of Class B and a trailer that does not conform to the Class B criteria this additional license is necessary.

Ok, and what does that mean for trailers by 3DOG camping?

Anyone can tow the version without brakes.
The trailer with brakes with 1,00 kg permitted total weight can be towed with a Class B driving license if the towing vehicle without lad weights at least 1,000 kg and has a permitted total weight of not more than 2,500 kg. Otherwise the additional driving license BE is necessary.
